Rte. 364 (Page Ave.) Prepares To Celebrate Its First Birthday
New traffic data shows more drivers are utilizing the roadway

December 9, 2004

ST LOUIS –Route 364 (Page Avenue) is getting ready to celebrate its first birthday on December 14. New traffic counts just released by the Missouri Department of Transportation certainly give motorists reason to celebrate.

New traffic counts completed in fall 2004 have revealed that traffic volumes on Rte. 364 have increased since initial numbers were released in March 2004. In addition, traffic volumes at the three other Missouri River crossings have decreased significantly since Rte. 364 opened to traffic.

According to recent traffic counts, an average of 49,969 vehicles are using Rte. 364 Monday through Sunday. When initial traffic counts were taken in March 2004, an average of 35,180 vehicles were using Rte. 364. The new numbers show a significant 38 percent increase in traffic volumes on Rte. 364 over the last seven months.

The three river crossings between St. Louis and St. Charles counties have also benefited since Rte. 364 opened to traffic. When compared to fall 2003, MoDOT engineers have seen a 26 percent decrease in traffic volumes on I-70, Rte. 40 and Rte. 370 combined (a decrease of about 32,000 vehicles).

Overall, I-70 appears to be the route that has benefited the most. Traffic volumes on I-70 near the Missouri River have dropped by nearly 22,000 (12 percent) between fall 2003 and fall 2004.

Total Traffic Volumes (Monday through Sunday):

I-70
186,773 (fall 2003)
165,079 (fall 2004)
Decrease = 21,694 (12%)

Rte. 370
59,907 (fall 2003)
56,782 (fall 2004)
Decrease = 3,125 (5%)

Rte. 40
85,183 (fall 2003)
77,523 (fall 2004)
Decrease = 7,660 (9%)

Rte. 364

MoDOT also investigated traffic volumes on Rte. 364 for Monday through Friday only. Rte. 364 carries nearly 54,000 vehicles a day Monday through Friday. In March 2004, Rte. 364 only carried approximately 45,000 vehicles a day Monday through Friday. Rte. 364 serves mainly as a commuter route with strong traffic volumes Monday through Friday, especially during the morning and evening rush hours.

MoDOT officials are very pleased with the latest traffic counts. "Traffic volumes are continuing to increase on Rte. 364, and that ultimately decreases traffic volumes on the other three river crossings," said MoDOT District Engineer Ed Hassinger. "Now that Rte. 364 has been open nearly a year, we can see a 26 percent decrease in traffic volumes on I-70, Rte. 40 and Rte. 370 combined and that is certainly great news."

Rte. 364 is an 8-mile, 10-lane roadway that stretches from Bennington Place in St. Louis County to west of Jungs Station Road and Rte. 94 in St. Charles County. Road construction on the $350 million project began in July 1997 and the roadway opened to traffic on December 14, 2003.

Rte. 364 is designed to connect to Rte. 40. There is currently no funding for future Rte. 364 work. Phase 2 would extend Rte. 364 from Jungs Station to Rte. N. Phase 3 would extend Rte. 364 from Rte. 94 at Rte. N to Rte. 40. On May 28, 2004 MoDOT opened a new bicycle/pedestrian trail connecting Creve Coeur Lake Memorial Park to the Katy Trail in St. Charles. That work was part of $40 million MoDOT has contributed toward improvements to Creve Coeur Park.
