Route 185 / Elmont Road Overpass Project

The new Elmont Road Overpass that crosses over Interstate 44.
Missouri Department of Transportation, along with the City of Sullivan, is pleased to celebrate the completion of a major project on Route 185 at the Elmont Road Overpass in the city of Sullivan at a ribbon cutting ceremony on Tuesday, October 21, 2008.
Dedicating the Route 185 and Elmont Overpass Project is great news for the partnership between MoDOT and the City of Sullivan. The improvement project will now help relieve current traffic congestion, improve highway safety and accommodate future growth in Sullivan.

City of Sullivan Mayor James Schaltz and MoDOT Transportation Project Manager Shirley Norris mark the completion of the new Elmont Road Overpass at the ribbon cutting ceremony.
What Improvements Are Needed on Route 185 In The City Of Sullivan?
Route 185 north of Interstate 44, west Springfield Road south of Interstate 44 and the Interstate 44 interchange east of Route 185 are all very congested. This project will help relieve current congestion and accommodate future traffic growth in the city of Sullivan.
What Improvements Are Being Proposed?
- Relocate Route 185 slightly to the east and construct a new Route 185 bridge over Interstate 44 that would connect to Elmont Road. The new bridge would have two 12-foot lanes and two 6-foot shoulders. This would provide significant traffic relief to the Interstate 44 interchange (Exit 225) to the east. Sidewalks will be included on both sides of the new bridge and the shoulders and the approaches will be striped for bicycle lanes.
- Improve Alice Road to provide a connection to Route 185 and extend the roadway to the east to tie into Route WW (north outer road).
- Improve west Springfield Road, Route D and North Park Street to provide new connections to the south outer road.
-
The cul-de-sac at the south outer road has been eliminated and the south outer road will remain open. This is different than what was shown at the March 2005 public hearing. At the public hearing, the south outer road was to become a cul-de-sac near the Exit 225 intersection. In the current design, driving south on the south outer road, the western turning movement onto
Exit 225 will remain open, but the eastern turning movement will be eliminated.
- Add a traffic signal at the west Springfield (Exit 225) intersection (re-designated as Route 185).

What Is The Estimated Construction Cost?
The city of Sullivan and MoDOT will share the total cost of the project (50/50). By sharing the cost of the project, improvements can be made much sooner than originally scheduled. The project was awarded to Don Schneiders Excavating for approximately $8.5 million.
When Will Construction Begin And End?
Construction is underway and is expected to be completed by late 2008.

September 2006
