Highway Safety Grants

Annual Survey Logo

MoDOT’s, Highway Safety Division is responsible for administration of the following grant programs:  State and Community Highway Safety; Motor Carrier Safety Assistance; and the Safe Routes to School programs.

The State and Community Highway Safety Grant Program supports programs that reduce the number and severity of traffic crashes occurring on Missouri roadways and reduce traffic fatalities and injuries.  Areas of emphasis include alcohol- and/or drug–impaired driving, speeding, safety belt and child safety seat use, inattention or distracted driving, young drivers, mature drivers, and traffic crash data collection and analysis. The grant funding cycle corresponds with the federal fiscal year, which runs from October 1 through September 30.  Applications for funding are typically due no later than May 1, but because of changes in the grant system they will be due to Highway Safety by May 2, 2011.

The Motor Carrier Safety Assistance Program supports programs that reduce the number and severity of traffic crashes involving a commercial motor vehicle.  Areas of emphasis include alcohol- and drug–impaired driving, speeding, safety belt, inattention or distracted driving, weight, size, inspection compliance, and drug interdiction. Applications for the Motor Carrier Safety Assistance Program are due no later than June 1.

The Safe Routes to School Program supports safe biking and walking accommodations for children in grades K-8, including children with disabilities. There are two areas eligible for funding - behavioral and infrastructure. Behavioral activities may include public awareness and outreach campaigns, traffic education, and enforcement efforts. Infrastructure projects include engineering and construction efforts. Highway Safety is currently not accepting applications for the Safe Routes to School Program.  A future application deadline will be determined.

State agencies, political subdivisions of the state (e.g., counties, cities, villages) universities, schools, or not-for-profit organizations may submit applications to MoDOT to receive a grant from federal highway safety funds.

Qualifying applicants shall submit their program proposal on MoDOT's standard application form, which is available by logging on to the highway safety grant system below. Applications may also be requested by writing to the MoDOT, Highway Safety Division, P.O. Box 270, Jefferson City, Missouri 65102 or by calling 800-800-2358.
