The Missouri Department of Transportation's Safe & Sound Bridge Improvement Program is a two-pronged program to improve more than 800 of the state's poorest bridges in five years.
Most of them -- 554 -- are being completely replaced under a design-build contract with KTU Constructors that was awarded in 2009. The others are being rehabilitated in small packages with the projects groups according to type, size or location to expedited the design and construction process.
As of Dec. 31, 2011, 672 bridges had been completed -- 437 replacements and 235 rehabilitation projects. With just 130 bridges remaining to be built, the program is on target to be completed by the fall -- more than a year ahead of schedule.
