Overall Scope of Work within the Railroad Section : In Missouri, there are approximately 4,400 miles of main track, 2,500 miles of yard track and about 7000 public and private crossings. At the present time 19 different railroads operate in the state of Missouri. The MoDOT Multimodal Division administers the state’s railroad program. This program includes freight rail regulation, passenger rail, light rail safety regulation, highway/rail crossing safety, rail/highway construction, and railroad safety inspection and outreach.

The railroad section of the Multimodal Division works with Amtrak and also works to improve public and railroad employee safety, and is also responsible for public highway-railroad crossings, and inspection of railroad infrastructure as it relates to track, grade crossing signals, and operating practices of each railroad.
