Route D:  Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad has announced roadwork on Route D in Atchison County.  On Monday, December 1st the railroad will be closing Route D three miles north of US 136 for crossing repairs.  The road will be closed to all traffic from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.  Motorists should use an alternate route during this time.

Construction Projects:

Interstate 29:  Hot-in-place recycling is being done on I-29.  The project started in May from the Iowa State line south to Route 111 at Rock Port.  The resurfacing project will utilize the hot-in-place recycling method in which asphalt pavement surfaces are corrected by softening the existing surface with heat, then mechanically removing the pavement surface, mixing it with a recycling or rejuvenating agent, possibly adding virgin asphalt and/or aggregate, and replacing it on the pavement without removing the recycled material from the existing roadway.  The contractor on this project will be Ideker Corporation of St. Joseph.   This project is currently in progress.

US 59 Hwy. & 4th Street In St. Joseph - The Missouri Department of Transportation would like to make the citizens of the St. Joseph community aware of a decision to investigate the removal of the existing traffic signal at the intersection of US 59 and Fourth Street in north St. Joseph. The possibility of removing the signal to replace it with a stop sign on Fourth Street has been discussed with the City of St. Joseph and all parties agree that the location no longer warrants a traffic signal.  When the signal was originally installed, Fourth Street was a one-way two-lane street with dual right turns onto US 59. Today, Fourth Street carries two-way traffic, and at the intersection, there is only a single right turning lane onto US 59. A study completed in 2007, showed the traffic volume on Fourth Street was only about 40% of the original design volume. The replacement of the signal with a stop sign should improve overall intersection service and save money related to the electrical usage costs and signal maintenance.  MoDOT plans to put the signal on flash beginning Monday, November 24th. The signal will remain in this flash mode for six months to simulate a stop condition on Fourth Street. If the intersection operates favorably during this study period, it will be removed and replaced with a stop sign on Fourth Street.  Citizens with comments or concerns about the removal of this signal are encouraged to call the Customer Service hotline toll-free at: 1-888-ASK-MoDOT (888-275-6636) or email comments to Community Relations Manager Margaret Justus at: margaret.Justus@modot.mo.gov
