MoDOT Announces First Phase of

Amendment 3 Projects

KANSAS CITY - It's been only a month since voters approved Amendment 3, providing additional revenue for Missouri roads and bridges.   Today, Missouri Department of Transportation officials unveiled the first round of projects that will be built with this money.

"MoDOT is acting quickly so these projects can be under construction this coming summer," said MoDOT Director Pete Rahn.   "Missouri is counting on us to make a big impact with this money.   We will deliver."

At today's meeting of the Highways and Transportation Commission, commissioners approved 57 projects totaling $160 million that comprise part of the Smooth Roads Initiative. Remaining projects to complete the initiative will be announced in January.

The initiative is the first portion of the three-part Smoother, Safer, Sooner program. The program will invest about $1.7 billion in Amendment 3-financed bonds over the next several years.

The Smooth Roads Initiative will provide 2,200 miles of smoother pavement, brighter road markings and other safety improvements on the state's most heavily traveled highways in three years.   The initiative will invest $400 million in Amendment 3 bonds.

The highway miles included in the Smooth Roads Initiative account for 60 percent of all traffic on the state system.   About 86 percent of Missouri's population lives within 10 miles of one of the selected roads.   Improvements will include better pavement for a smoother drive, as well as brighter stripes and signs, reflective pavement markers separating lanes, improved shoulders with rumble strips, and safer guardrails.

The second element of the Smoother, Safer, Sooner program will speed up many construction projects currently planned for the next five years.   These accelerated projects will be announced next month, along with the remaining projects from the Smooth Roads Initiative.

The program's third element, construction of major new projects statewide, will be announced in May after public involvement activities help determine the state's highest priorities.
