Map Gives Road Conditions 24/7

When bad weather is forecast, it's important to know there's a place you can go anytime day or night to find out major road conditions throughout the state.

MoDOT’s Web site, www.modot.org, offers a map that shows general road conditions on the state’s major highways.  The map, which is updated every 30 minutes during winter storms, will tell you whether a road is dry, wet, partly covered, covered or closed.  Motorists can zoom in for details on routes in the Kansas City and St. Louis areas.

The map received more than 26,000 visits when the state received its first significant snowfall of the season on Dec. 8.

“Those numbers show that this map is a handy tool when the weather gets bad,” said MoDOT Director Pete Rahn.  “Our job is to get the roads cleared as quickly as possible so people can travel safely.  The map is meant to help you determine whether it’s safe to drive or best to stay put.”

The map isn’t intended to give the weather or forecast future conditions, Rahn said.  Often, detailed conditions change faster than can be reported, and frozen material on the roads can transform quickly between snow, slush and ice. For that reason, only general conditions are shown.

In addition to the map, MoDOT offers a toll-free telephone number – 1-888-ASK-MoDOT - for motorists to call during business hours to learn more about road conditions.  The Missouri State Highway Patrol also provides recorded 24-hour winter road conditions on major routes across the state by calling 1-800-222-6400.
