Innovative MoDOT Web Site Saves Freight Companies Time, Business Costs

JEFFERSON CITY – With the flip of a switch, the MoDOT Motor Carrier Services division tripled its hours of service for large-sized load trucking companies.

“Our new Internet-based permit system works around-the-clock, as do many of the hauling companies we serve,” said Jan Skouby, MoDOT Motor Carrier Services director. “Now we can respond much more quickly to truckers’ requests to move big loads, saving time and money for all of us.”

When a motor carrier has a load that exceeds the normal legal height, width or weight limits, they must apply for an overdimension/overweight permit. MoDOT Motor Carrier Services agents check the shipping route to ensure that bridges and driving lanes can safely accommodate the load. The permit fees MoDOT collects fund highway system upkeep.

Before shippers were able to apply online, they often encountered busy signals or long hold times when calling for a permit. Since the system opened in November, almost 50 percent of requests have been filed online.

“I don’t have to hold on the phone to apply for a permit, and I can make requests 24 hours a day. It’s a timesaver,” said Patricia Langdon of Triple S Hauling in Columbia. “And it’s easy to use once you learn the program.”

According to Kim Jackson, the Web application reduces costs for her employer, A & G Trucking of Ashland.

“It takes less than a minute to apply, and then I can get to other work while I wait for the paperwork to come over the fax machine."

“We’re excited to help improve our customers’ bottom line. And even though the system is brand new, we’ve got several improvements planned for the start of next year,” said Skouby. “It’s all about using every available tool to help businesses prosper.”
