U.S. Route 54 Corridor Intersection Improvements
MoDOT is making improvements to twelve intersections along the U.S. 54 corridor in Cole County, along approximately 8.5 miles between Route CC and Old Bass Road. Among similar highways, this section of roadway is ranked one of the highest in the state for the number of fatal intersection crashes.
Serious injuries have also resulted from crashes at intersections across the corridor. Many of the crashes involve vehicles from the adjacent roadways pulling into the path of vehicles on U.S. 54.
The project team has studied the corridor beginning in March 2010 and proposed a variety of engineering strategies to modify multiple intersections in an effort to improve safety. These adjustments will maintain traffic flow on U.S. 54, as well as to and from the highway.
The Missouri Department of Transportation formed an advisory committee in spring 2010 to provide input about the possible safety improvements to the U.S. Route 54 corridor in Cole County. The committee was comprised of local law enforcement, emergency response, school districts, public works, and local residents and business owners.
The Missouri Department of Transportation plans to construct a new interchange on Route 179 in Cole County. The interchange will be located between Route C and Edgewood Drive in Jefferson City, and will provide access to a new St. Mary's Health Center development at this location.
The construction of the new interchange will cost approximately $7 million and is a joint effort between MoDOT, the City of Jefferson and Cole County. A $2.5 million access road to the new St. Mary's Health Center is included in the project and will be funded by the city and county.
Work on the interchange and access road began in August 2011 and take just over one year to complete.
MoDOT proposes to rehabilitate the Route B bridge over the Osage River in Cole County. Work is scheduled to take place in early 2013 and take about four months to complete. The bridge is located north of St. Thomas. One lane will remain open during construction and temporary traffic signals will guide motorists through the work zone. No additional right of way is needed for this work. The project will cost about $3.6 million.
The Missouri Department of Transportation will resurface approximately 1.6 miles of the U.S. 54 outer roadway (Jefferson Street) in Jefferson City, from near Stadium Boulevard and west to the end of state maintenance near Oak Leaf Drive. Jefferson Asphalt Company of Jefferson City, Mo. was awarded the contract for the work. The resurfacing is scheduled to take place in summer 2011.
Route 179 Resurfacing in Cole and Moniteau Counties
The Missouri Department of Transportation will resurface approximately 22 miles of Route 179, from Route 87 in Moniteau County to just north of West Main Street in Jefferson City. Jefferson Asphalt Company of Jefferson City, Mo. was awarded the contract for the work. The resurfacing is scheduled to take place in summer 2011.
The Missouri Department of Transportation will resurface 4.5 miles of Route T in Cole County, from Route 179 to U.S. 50 in St. Martins. Jefferson Asphalt Company of Jefferson City, Mo. was awarded the contract for the work. The resurfacing is scheduled to take place in summer 2011.
The Missouri Department of Transportation has partnered with Cole County and Jefferson City to complete an environmental impact study of the Whitton Expressway. The study will examine what improvements might address current and future needs for safety and capacity. The study will also examine connectivity to the planned redevelopment at the Missouri State Penitentiary site.
The study area includes the Whitton Expressway (US Route 50/63) from just east of the Route 54/63 tri-level interchange east to the Eastland Drive interchange. It extends to McCarty Street on the north, and approximately Dunklin Street to the south.
The Missouri Department of Transportation has built a pedestrian/bicycle attachment on the U.S. 54 Eastbound/U.S. 63 Northbound Missouri River Bridge in Jefferson City. The attachment provides a safer connection from the Katy Trail to downtown Jefferson City.
Work on the attachment began in mid-May 2010 and the new attachment opened on April 8, 2011. The construction required narrowed lanes on the bridge, periodic lane closures on the bridge, and the closure of the Main Street ramp to Route 54/63.
The project cost approximately $6.7 million to construct. The Missouri Department of Transportation, City of Jefferson, Department of Natural Resources, and the Missouri State Parks Foundation are funding the project.
The Missouri Department of Transportation relocated U.S. 50 from St. Martins in Cole County to west of California in Moniteau County. The first phase of the project consisted of 11 miles of new four lane highway between the existing St. Martins interchange to Route K, east of California. Phase Two is 8.35 miles from Route K to west of California, and included grading, paving, drainage work and a new interchange at Route 87. From Route 87 around California the highway is now two lanes with paved shoulders.
Construction on Phase One began in early 2007 and was completed in October 2008. Phase Two construction began in late summer 2008 and was completed in July 2010. The contractor for both phases is Illinois Valley Paving, Co., of Springfield Ill.
U.S. Route 50, Missouri Boulevard and Route 179 InterchangeImprovements
The Missouri Department of Transportation realigned Missouri Boulevard at the U.S. Route 50 and Route 179 interchange in Jefferson City. The realignment included constructing additional turn lanes at various locations within the interchange area.
The project cost approximately $6.5 million and was being funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. Work began in early 2010 and ended in October 2010.
